BIGBURY ON SEA is a small village in the South Hams. The large sandy beach is excellent for swimming, surfing and windsurfing and Bigbury Golf Club, with its 18 hole course and sea views, is nearby. The Venus Beach Café set just up from the beach sells a variety of hot and cold snacks and is the perfect spot for a lazy breakfast or a hot snack after a refreshing swim.

The beach offers plenty of opportunities for safe fun particularly if you've got children in tow. It is dotted with rock pools, so there's plenty of creepy-crawly entertainment for budding marine biologists. While this beach is popular with families, there are a number of facilities and activities available if you're seeking a bit more excitement on your holiday. There's a wide and varied selection of water sports available to visitors who prefer their holidays to feature a little adrenaline rush. If you want to try something different from the usual bodyboarding or surfing then windsurfing and kite-surfing are gaining popularity here, with hire facilities located right on the beach. To give you peace of mind, there are lifeguards present at Bigbury on Sea beach during May to September and the beach also has a first-aid room. Dogs are allowed on the beach although they are restricted to certain areas during the summer.

The Beach

Bigbury on Sea beach has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag in recognition of the beach's excellent standards, particularly its efforts to make the beach accessible to everyone. In addition to good disabled access, Bigbury on Sea beach also provides Beach Wheelchairs for those with mobility requirements. It is one of the South Coast's best locations for windsurfing, canoeing and dramatic coastal walks and is, undoubtedly, one of the most stunning beaches in the South Hams. South Devon is an area of outstanding natural beauty with its pretty villages, excellent blue flag beaches, varied coastline and moorland areas. This is an ideal place from which to enjoy a fun filled family holiday or complete relaxation.

Burgh Island Sunset

The enjoyment of the area does not rely on the weather, as there is so much to explore and places to visit to suit all ages.

There are many special coastal places to visit nearby including the small towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe; the sheltered beach at Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curved pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon. There is an abundance of fabulous coastal walks to enjoy and plenty of great pubs and restaurants.
