Kingston and Modbury Holiday Cottages

About

A bit off the tourist trail, Kingston is a charming South Hams village surrounded by rolling countryside, and just a mile from the unspoilt Erme Estuary and Wonwell Beach. The nearest town, Modbury, is a real ‘jewel’ in the South Hams. Quirky shops, great pubs and of course, famous for being the first town to go plastic bag free, it’s an easy drive from Kingston.

Things to do

Kingston is a place to unwind and enjoy a slower pace of life. Wander round the village with its thatched cottages, its 14th century church and its welcoming pub the Dolphin Inn. A great spot to start or end a walk, with trails to the Erme Estuary and on to the South West Coastal Path.                                                  Kingston has its own recreation ground with a large children’s play area. There is a multi-purpose tarmac area with pre erected nets, a football field, skateboarding ramps, a fenced play area for younger children, a picnic area, log cabin and adventure trails.

A short drive and you can be on a selection of dog friendly beaches such as Wonwell, Wyscombe Beach and Ayrmer Cove

Slightly further is Bigbury on Sea where you can surf and paddle board to your hearts content. A ride on the Sea Tractor over to Burgh Island is not to be missed.

Eat and Drink

In Kingston itself you have the Dolphin Inn. Just up the road in St Anns Chapel is The Pickwick Inn which serves up the most delicious Sunday lunches as well as take away pizzas. There is a great one stop shop here which sells delicious hot pasties, pastries and local produce.

In the nearby village of Ringmore is The Journeys End – one not to be missed. In Modbury you have a choice of pubs and tea rooms including Cool Beans – superb for coffee and cake.

A few miles north east, and half way between the coast and the moor, is the heritage market town of Modbury. A great base for exploring this corner of Devon.

Things to do

Kingston is a place to unwind and enjoy a slower pace of life. Wander round the village with its thatched cottages, its 14th century church and its welcoming pub the Dolphin Inn, just down the hill. A great spot to start or end a walk, with trails to the Erme Estuary or south to the coast path and nearby Wyscombe Beach and Ayrmer Cove.

The market town of Modbury has history dating back to Anglo Saxon times – its Saxon name “Moot Burgh” means meeting place. It was a regional trading and administrative centre for hundreds of years, and also featured in the Civil war (1642 – 1651) when a large contingent of Parliamentarians overthrew a local Royalist force , many of whom escaped down a lane that leads towards the Erme Valley, called Runaway Lane to this day – it’s one of many beautiful walks in the area.

Base yourself in Modbury and it’s an easy drive north to Dartmoor, west to Plymouth, east to Totnes or south to the wonderful South Hams coastline.
